Abstract Submission has now closed

The Conference theme is “Coasts and Ports in a Dynamic Environment”. This theme encapsulates the evolution of the physical environment through climate variability and change as well as changes to industry, policy and social expectations.

Abstracts have been submitted on the following thematic strands: 

The Challenges of Environmental Change as it affects coasts and ports
Including climate change, storminess and sea level rise, coastal hazards, tsunami, sedimentation and erosion.

Innovation in Maritime Industries
Including hazards management in coastal shipping, pollution and oil spill control, sustainability, operations management, dredging and reclamation, biosecurity.

Policy and Planning for Dynamic Coastal and Port Environments
Including coastal and regional policy statements, natural hazards management, the coastal property boom, marine energy, the New Zealand oceans survey programme, coastal resources, aquaculture and the New Zealand Coastal Shippping Strategy.

Accepted papers will be presented orally at the conference. Full papers will be published in the conference proceedings, which will be available on digital media, and extended abstracts will be published in the conference handbook.

Abstract submission instructions

All abstracts are to be submitted online via the link at the top of this page. Submission of full papers and extended abstracts will also be online.

We encourage, where possible, the presenting authors to submit abstracts. During the submission process, you will be asked to list co-authors and confirm that you are the presenting author. If the presenting author changes, please advise Avenues Event Management as soon as possible.

At the end of the upload procedure, abstracts will be converted from Microsoft Word format, to an Adobe PDF file. It is the responsibility of the submitting author to view and proof the PDF file to ensure it has been uploaded successfully and is formatted to the submitting author’s satisfaction. The PDF conversion may upset formatting of scientific symbols, so please pay particular attention to these. If you believe your abstract requires re formatting, please contact Avenues Event Management straight away to request this.

Preparation guidelines and abstract template

1. Abstracts must be in English and must be thoroughly checked for spelling and grammar before submission.
2. Abstracts are to be submitted in Microsoft Word 97–2003 Document format only.
3. Abstracts must be no longer than 300 words in length.
4. Abstracts may not include diagrams, tables or references.
5. Abstracts should be formatted using the Coasts and Ports Conference 2009 Conference Abstract Guidelines

Conditions of acceptance for papers

Full papersmust be formatted in accordance with Full Paper Preparation Guidelines that will be provided to successful authors. Full papers will be limited to 7 pages.
  Extended Abstracts must be formatted in accordance with the preparation guidelines and formatted in accordance with the Extended Abstract Template.
Presenting authors will be required to register and pay the earlybird conference fee by 17 July 2009 to ensure that their paper(s) are included in the final programme.
Each registrant may present up to 2 papers.
Only original material should be submitted.
Papers should contain enough detail to clearly convey the approach and the results of the research.
Commercial presentations with no new research/development content, and papers where supporting data or a technical description cannot be given for proprietary reasons will not be accepted.
Inclusion of papers in the programme will require the transfer of copyright from author/s to Coasts and Ports 2009.
Government and company clearance to present and publish should be final at the time of submittal.
Acceptance of the full paper will be based on peer review.


Review criteria, notification and programme placement

To ensure a high-quality conference, all submissions will be reviewed by the Coasts and Ports Conference 2009 Technical Programme Committee for merit and suitablility of content. The Committee require the full paper before final approval, and reserve the right to reject for presentation any paper that does not meet content or presentation expectations. The decision of the Committee on whether to accept a presentation is final.

Authors will be notified of the acceptance or otherwise of their abstract(s) by email. Full papers and extended abstracts will be required by 19 June 2009. Final placement in an oral session is subject to the Technical Programme Committee's discretion.

The Conference Managers will not be held responsible for paper submissions not received via the website or for submission errors caused by Internet service outages, hardware or software delays, power outages or unforeseen events. Authors will receive an email acknowledgement immediately after submitting their paper. Please contact Avenues Event Management if this does not occur, on coastsandports2009@avenues.co.nz

Copyright assignment

The transfer of copyright from author/s to Coasts and Ports Conference 2009 must be clearly stated to enable publication of the submitted work in the Conference Proceedings. The copyright assignment applies to authors wishing to submit papers for presentation and will be required at submission of full paper.
